A secondhand leather jacket just sold for over NT$31 million! Jensen Huang‘s well-worn black leather, The Jensen Jacket, hammered down at Sotheby’s New York on July 17. The brand is Tom Ford, about US$10,000 new. This one, signed and visibly worn, went for US$960,000, nearly a hundred times retail. Before the auction it was image-matched to confirm it is the very jacket he wore to Hon Hai Tech Day in Taipei in 2023, the same trip where he toured night markets posing with vendors. Back then we just thought the nation‘s dad was down to earth. Nobody guessed his jacket would become an artifact. The best part is where the money went. The auction was started by San Francisco VC Long Journey, and neither they nor Jensen kept a dollar. All of it went to

Gus。 What does it feel like to have a T. rex buried under your land? Like winning NT$1.68 billion! This July, the T. rex Gus went under the hammer at Sotheby’s New York, crowned the most expensive dinosaur fossil in history. Gary Lee King was a South Dakota rancher everyone called Gus. He herded cattle his whole life, and while others picked up nails and bottles on their ranches, he kept finding teeth and bones. After decades, he pointed at a small hill and told the dig team: go look, I left all my treasure right there. A 67-million-year-old beast had been lying beneath his cattle all along. 183 real bones, nearly 80 percent complete, out of only 32 T. rex ever unearthed worldwide, and just two are more complete. This one was a tough customer too: bite marks from its own kind on the skull, ribs broken and healed. It got bitten till its head bled and still toughed it out, a true street-smart rex. Sadly Gus never got to see it. Digging had just begun in 2022 when he passed away. So the team decided this T. rex would be named Gus.

Golden dots and a sleeping nude. Looks like Klimt? Wrong! It‘s his nineteen-year-old protege Egon Schiele. This June, his Danae sold at Sotheby’s London for NT$778 million. In Greek myth, Danae was a princess locked in a tower by her father the king, after an oracle warned that her son would one day kill him. Zeus turned himself into a shower of gold, slipped in through the cracks, and she gave birth to Perseus, the hero who beheaded Medusa. The prophecy came true anyway: at a games, Perseus threw a discus that accidentally killed an old man, his own royal grandfather. At seventeen, Schiele asked Klimt: do I have talent? Klimt replied: yes, far too much. Two years later Schiele honored his master with the same myth, but where Klimt‘s gold pours down like a waterfall, Schiele’s gold wraps her like a protective shell. A year later he tore off the gold leaf entirely and became the twisted, pale Viennese genius who stared desire in the face. Eight months after Klimt died, the Spanish flu too
